Governor Moore Celebrates Maryland’s Feature on Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel List

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore today announced that Maryland has been named to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027 list, placing the state among 50 destinations and experiences around the world selected by Lonely Planet’s global community of travel experts.
The recognition highlights Maryland’s distinctive combination of history, culture, outdoor recreation, food, waterways and vibrant communities—from Baltimore and Annapolis to the Eastern Shore, Southern Maryland and Western Maryland.
“Maryland is a place where history, culture, nature and innovation come together, and this recognition from Lonely Planet gives travelers around the world another reason to experience it for themselves,” said Gov. Moore. “Tourism is an important part of our state’s economy, supporting businesses, workers and communities across Maryland. As we look ahead to 2027, we have an opportunity to welcome even more visitors and share the stories that make Maryland such a special place to live, work and visit.”
The Lonely Planet recognition comes as Maryland continues to welcome visitors from across the country and around the world. In 2025, 47.4 million visitors came to Maryland to experience the state’s historic sites, outdoor recreation, waterfront destinations, arts and culture, and distinctive food and beverage experiences. Tourism supports businesses and jobs in communities across the state, from Maryland’s mountains to the Chesapeake Bay and beyond.
“Maryland’s tourism industry is a powerful economic engine for communities across our state, supporting businesses, jobs and opportunities across all regions,” said Maryland Department of Commerce Secretary Harry Coker Jr. “This recognition from Lonely Planet underscores the strength and diversity of Maryland’s visitor economy and the many reasons travelers choose to explore our state.”
Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2027 list features 50 destinations and experiences selected by the publisher’s global travel experts. This year’s list emphasizes travelers’ interest in meaningful experiences, slower travel and opportunities to explore beyond the most familiar destinations.
Maryland offers visitors opportunities to experience the state at their own pace, including historic sites and communities, the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coast, scenic byways, trails, outdoor recreation, museums, arts and culture, and Maryland’s distinctive culinary traditions.
“Travelers today are looking for experiences that connect them to the places they visit, and Maryland offers that in abundance,” said Maryland Office of Tourism Managing Director Cassandra Vanhooser. “Whether exploring our history, getting out on the water, enjoying our food and culture or discovering a new community, visitors can create a Maryland experience that is uniquely their own. The recognition comes as Maryland looks ahead to a major milestone in 2027: the 200th anniversary of American railroading. As the birthplace of American railroading, Maryland will mark the anniversary by inviting visitors to explore the state’s railroad heritage, including the historic Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, railroad communities and rail trails, while discovering the many destinations and experiences that make Maryland a distinctive place to visit.
